The Pickett House Restaurant
Where Southern Tradition is Served Family-StyleÂ
Nestled behind Heritage Village in Woodville, TX, sits the world-famous Pickett House restaurant–a boarding-house restaurant that has been serving up all-you-can-eat southern favorites for generations. No menus, no fuss — just steaming bowls of famous fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes, collard greens, black-eyed-peas, and cobbler. Â
A bite of history
The Pickett House isn’t just a restaurant; it’s part of the history of East Texas. The structure was originally a two-room schoolhouse called the Midway School, built in 1909. When the school closed in the 40s and students were transferred elsewhere, the building was purchased by Charles E. Dickens and relocated to operate as a grocery store. It was eventually purchased by Clyde Gray and moved to its current location to write itself into history as one of the best fried chicken joints in the world.Â
